Dec. 16th, 2008 06:50 pmToday in 1977, Saturday Night Fever hit theaters, spreading disco across the nation like a plague. Yes, I'll admit a moment of teenaged weakness...I bought the album. But I never saw the movie - never! Travolta's skintight pants could not sway me.
I had a bit of nice news this morning. My editor emailed to tell me that Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse books, had given Mad Kestrel a nice review on her blog. Thanks, Charlaine!

We had the Saturday Night Fever album in the house as well, purchased more for Donna Summers than anything else. I've never seen the movie either (since I'm a guy, I had no interest in watching Travolta dance around). I'm firmly in the Rock category.
I was going to high school in Staten Island at the time. Imagine over 4000 kids in school, and about 3600 of them Italian (I'm of Scottish/Irish descent). Now imagine half of them showing up in school all of a sudden dressed like Danny Terrio.
We had to ride the train (the only train line) to get to school. Every morning one of the Disco kids would pump up the volume on their boom box playing disco. Moments later, down at our end of the train car the rocker's boom box would drown them out by blasting "Long Live Rock" by the Who, which had the appropriate challenge to all those who claimed rock was dead.
Those were fun times.
