Jan. 2nd, 2009 04:01 pmToday in 1920, Isaac Asimov was born. One of his many words of wisdom: "From my close observation of writers … they fall into two groups: those who bleed copiously and visibly at any bad review, and those who bleed copiously and secretly at any bad review."
It occurred to me that I never shared the titles of the books I received for Christmas. When I was a kid, my friends would be excitedly talking about their gifts of Love's Baby Soft cologne, new rabbit fur jackets or the latest albums by KC and the Sunshine Band and Pablo Cruise. I, however, would be in heaven over the books I'd unwrapped. I know you understand.
Christmas 2008's haul consisted of
Small Favor by Jim Butcher. Yeah, I'm a Dresden fan, from way back.
Naomi Novik's Victory of Eagles, the latest tale in the saga of Temeraire.
Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt. I've been dying to read this book. I know it didn't get the greatest reviews, but I'm giving it a shot anyway.
Fast Ships, Black Sails, the pirate-ish anthology from Ann and Jeff Vandermeer. Because....well, pirate!
Pilot Light, by William Ashbless (okay, yes, I know that's really Tim Powers and James Blaylock, but let me keep my illusions!) It's a "lost" short story by Ashbless the poet, and even though one of the reviewers calls it a bunch of in-jokes, that actually attracted me more to the thing.
Fewer books than in past years, but enough to make me happy.
