Today in 1930, the news of the discovery of Pluto was telegraphed to the Harvard College Observatory. Hey, Pluto was good enough for Harvard then, it's STILL good enough. Reinstate Pluto!

I live in South Carolina. Yes, the state with the governor who doesn't want any of that dirty stimulus money thank-you-very-much. Today I was reading a story online about how he's now refusing the 700 million dollar portion that was set aside for school stabilization. Without that money, 7500 educators stand to lose their jobs. Have I mentioned where I am currently employed? The story was followed by comments from many non-South Carolinians calling us toothless idiots who hope to return to the attitudes of the old Confederacy. It was a completely depressing way to spend my lunch break.

I got home and found this delightful idea from [livejournal.com profile] beatrizwench:

Tired of all the doom and gloom on the news? Weary of the latest tumbling stock market prices? Bored with bailouts? How 'bout giving us five good things in your life today? No matter HOW much it sucks, there's got to be something that's good in your life. Spread some job; its infectious.

It's been one of those days, so I'm taking her suggestion.

1. My dance troupe was scheduled to march in the Charlotte St Patrick's Day parade on Saturday. The weather turned suddenly cold a couple of days ago, and the weather folks started calling for rain on parade day. We were overjoyed to learn last night the parade's been postponed! We don't have to march in the cold rain with our bellies showing! I also am now able to sleep late tomorrow morning.

2. My dance troupe chose our new costumes for this year, and they are going to ROCK!

3. I came home and took a nap, and when I woke up, my darling husband was curled up on the couch with me. This is such a lovely way to wake up.

4. My sister's cat had to be shaved, but they didn't do her feet, head or tail. Alicia sent me a photo. I'm still laughing. (Don't tell the cat.)

5. This week on Magical Words we had great fun writing about where we write.

Go, Pluto! When we are done celebrating the day when the population was perfect, we should have a Pluto rally!

I understand your fear. My school district alone is "laying off" over 1100 teaching positions next year. Many of my friends will not have a job after June 30.

I enjoyed the Magical Words entry....OMG, not only do you write a great book and like coffee from the proper part of the world... you like peppermint ice cream!! :-)

IF you can find an excuse to get to Santa Barbara (in theory they have a Writer's Conference here annually, tho it was cancelled this year due to the economy, go figure... still, there's one idea?) -- IF you manage to get here, we have the veryveryvery best ice cream place in town... made locally, and they have peppermint stick ice cream year round. AND they let me bring my dog inside to buy her a cone too (bonus points).

I'm sure I'll get out there eventually, so it's a date!

AND they let me bring my dog inside to buy her a cone too (bonus points).

That is too cool! I went to Wales in 1992 on a vacation, and one of the neatest things about the trip was seeing all the dogs in the pubs.

Pluto is a planet!

Pluto most certainly still is a planet. Only four percent of the IAU voted on the controversial demotion, and most are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately opposed in a petition of hundreds of professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto. You can find that petition here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/planetprotest/

By the way... I'm writing a paper about LJ and I was really hoping that I might be able to get your input since you've been using LJ for a long time...and you are super-awesome. :) If you have time tomorrow, will you check out my last post???
