Today in 1978, Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler made the first ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. I am dreadfully afraid of heights - can't stand on a table without trembling - but the idea of climbing Everest fascinates me. Trouble is I'd reach the top and be too scared to come down, and end up frozen to some outcropping. I'll stay down here, thanks.

We had an extra dance practice tonight, so now I'm twice as sore as I normally would be going into the weekend. Lucky me. But the show's going to be wicked, so it was worth it.

The Beetle brought home his ACT score (it's the other college entrance test, comparable to the SAT but geared more toward math and science kids.) His composite was 23! For his first time taking it, this was really good. He'll take it again next year for college apps, but this is such a load off my mind. 23 is plenty high enough to qualify for the school he wants. Hallelujah.

I'm going to get a little work done before I crash. Night. y'all.

Yay for the Beetle! Can't believe they're getting old enough to apply to colleges. Eek.

If you get to the top of Everest, we'll send rescue dogs. :)

Serious! Whenever I let myself think about how close graduation really is, I get sick to my tummy. But hey, our parents got through it, so I guess we can, too. *hugs*

And thanks for the dogs, sweetie - can I have the ones with the brandy cask? I know I'll want a swig of something stimulating!

No kidding! When I met the Beetle, I was still IN college!

Good job on those scores! I remember that test. It wiped my brain for the rest of the weekend.

Good for him! Test scores aren't everything, but they sure do open doors :)
Hope your show is awesome.

Exactly. And he's not really a great test-taker, so a score this good to start is reassuring.

The show is for Drumstrong, which is a weekend-long drumming marathon to raise money for cancer research. It's outdoors, and things will be hot and sweaty, but we always have such a great audience.

Speaking of outdoors, you're still good? Did you get the horses moved?

Yes, thanks, we're all good here. Fire's still going strong but the weather has grown more conducive to firefighting so things look good; everyone who needed to get animals out today (among my circle of friends) was able to do so; and so far no one I personally know has lost property.
Nice to have all good news on day 4 of a major fire!

That's extra awesome that he scored high and isn't a good tester. I had the superpower of being able to "fake it" well in tests; but the tradeoff was that I was a rotten everyday student :) I imagine he's probably going to be a great scholar once he gets through the standardized testing hoohaa.

What a neat way to raise money for research... way more fun than just walking or running!

That's cool news! Personally, I think they should do away with the SATs, but that's because they tested stuff that my pitiful school barely touched on. On the other hand, and from what I can recall, the ACTs seemed to test for things that were more "down to earth".

Fingers crossed The Beetle gets in. :)

Hey, can I congratulate him on the scores? Or at least ask him 'bout it? (don't want to embarass him, ya know?)

You sure can - he's very proud of it, too!
