Jun. 2nd, 2009 08:34 pmToday in 455, the Vandals entered Rome, and plundered the city for two weeks. I guess that explains all those ruins spray-painted with For a good time call Geiseric.
Saturday at the con dawned bright and grumpy. I was scheduled for the Pirates panel at 9 am. Pirates. Before noon. Luckily I was joined by the Buccaneers of the Atlantic Coast, and together we managed to be entertaining for an hour. Afterward I had a break until 1, so I took a walk through the dealer room, then planted myself at my table to sell books and talk to fans. I was having such a good time that it was a shock to realize I was starving. I collected Jan (my buddy) and
beatrizwench and we walked to the Chick-Fil-A. We ate, then snuck food into the con for David, who was suffering the back-to-back panels as I had done the night before (the hotel had banned outside food, but we fantasy types tend to be a furtive lot!) Our 1 o'clock went well, as did the panel on race in fantasy/sci fi at 4 (I was fortunate to meet
marciacolette there - she's just as charming as she can be!) The readings began at 5, with a passage from
faithhunter's upcoming Jane Yellowrock novel, Skinwalker.
davidbcoe followed with a short story for an upcoming dragon anthology, and it was laugh out loud funny! Suddenly it was my turn - how was I supposed to follow all that? Gotta admit I was shaking when I took my place at the table. I read the first two chapters of Mad Kestrel, but the audience seemed to enjoy it, too. *grin*
A small troop of us went off-campus to get some dinner at a Chinese buffet that featured a huge assortment of sushi and some OMGyummy crab rangoon that I had to force myself to walk away from, or I'd have made myself sick on them. Did I mention that Katherine Kurtz was sitting across from me??? *preens* She's an absolutely delightful lady, and I'm so lucky I was able to meet her. She agreed to be our guest on Magical Words later on this year, so keep your eyes open for that. We returned to the hotel, and
philipmcavery, the Beetle, Jan and I went to the Dr Horrible/Buffy the Vampire Slayer singalong. We all eventually joined up again in the bar, where I heard the shocking tale of a male writer showing up to the Gender Bending panel dressed in his girlish best. Apparently it was his coming out. And I missed it for the musical episode of Buffy. Ah well...
