Today in 1937, Spam was introduced into the market by the Hormel Foods Corporation. I can't help believing things like Spam, Velveeta and hot dogs are part of a horrible alien conspiracy to kill us off and leave the planet undefended.

My royal niece came home yesterday:

In other news, my dear friend [livejournal.com profile] faithhunter's newest book, Skinwalker, is on bookstore shelves right now! If you want a great summer read, trust me, you'll like this.

I am a movie freak. Not an aficianado - I can't sit and discuss the merits of a film's cinematography compared to its remake, or argue in favor of the Italian version over the French. I read an article today about how tempting the sale DVD rack is - how even movies that no one else liked are somehow attractive when they cost $5. It's quite true - I've bought a number of movies that no one else will watch with me, because they were on sale. Yes, I'm a huge fan of movies. Heist films, especially. Let me run across a rerunning of Ocean's Eleven (original or remake - I like them both), The Italian Job or Snatch and I'll drop whatever I'm doing to watch. Not just those, though. I can also be completely distracted by the Lord of the Rings trilogy, 300 or Kelly's Heroes. to name a few.

So I'm curious - what movies will halt you in your tracks?

Eee! 'Kelly's Heroes'! That is such a fun film! I think it works because the Clint Eastwood character is a serious bank-robber who gets on with the job, while all around him these weird characters are being anachronistically hippy.

'Where Eagles Dare' is the one I watched so often that I can quote along with the actors. (Clint Eastwood again. I had such a crush on him when I was 14!) But my favourites, for ever and always, are the Fred and Ginger movies. Sheer magic.

PS I forgot to add: that is a gorgeous picture of Her Royal Highness. I had an adorable baby like that once. She's now 23 (and adorable in a different way.) Where, oh where do the years go?????

*sigh* I have a nearly-six-foot-tall teenager across the room who used to be this tiny, too. If I figure out where the years go, I'll certainly share. :D

Yeah, it occured to me after I hit "post" that Kelly's Heroes was a heist film, too. I just can't resist 'em!

Let's see... 300... Troy (yes, it was a dreadful movie and I still love it), The 13th Warrior, The Hunt for Red October, and The Sting are a few that will suck me in and keep me from doing what I'm supposed to do

Oh yes, The Hunt gets me every time!

That is an unusually gorgeous newborn, I'm thinking. She's a little beauty. I'm sure the whole family has fallen hard for her.

Thank you! She's in serious danger of heavy spoilage!

I remember one night - after midnight - cicking through channels and stopping in my tracks because Silence of the Lambs was on. I was completely sucked in and didn't get to sleep until 2:30 am.

Le sigh

Good fantasy from the 80's will actually make me stop and sit still. Legend, The Princess Bride, and Willow come to mind, right off the top of my head. Also, most any Disney animated feature, as long as it isn't a crappy sequel.
