Sep. 7th, 2009 03:03 pmDuring the hanging scene in Blazing Saddles, Boris the Hangman can be seen getting ready to hang an older gentleman in a wheelchair, which Hedley Lamarr refers to as "the Dr. Gillespie killings". This is a reference to Lionel Barrymore's character of Dr. Leonard Gillespie, which he played in fifteen different movies between 1938 and 1947. Lionel Barrymore was confined to a wheelchair due to arthritis, so the Dr. Gillespie character was always played from a wheelchair.
*heavy sigh of contentment* I am home from DragonCon. I was going to try and share every little detail of the weekend but my brain is spinning a bit, so I'm going to copy
beatrizwench and bullet it instead.
- It was big and noisy and crowded. Normally crowds give me the major willies (football games used to rattle me into little shiny bits!) but I managed to be tough. Once I became oriented, it wasn't so bad. The marvelous
beatrizwench showed me around all weekend. We got lost together once or twice and I got lost once all by myself, but it was fun nevertheless.
- To my great joy, I had no travel drah-ma this time. The car behaved all the way there and back, and parking in the train station was easy, safe and cheap. I paid $12 to park for the entire weekend, and $4.75 for a round trip train ticket. I talked to a few other folks who were paying in excess of $20 per day to park nearer to the hotels. Wow!
- A charming Southern man in a ball cap gave me his Sailor Jerry's rum and coke while I was waiting on the elevator with all my luggage. Luckily it wasn't tainted with anything.
- I was wearing my I swear, I thought they were zombies! pin and a fellow in the dealer's room started laughing out loud at it.
- I met my marvelous editor, Stacy Hague-Hill in person! She's delightful, and I was so tickled to have a very valuable hour of private chat with her. She also gave me books. Seriously, you give me books and I will follow you anywhere!
- I was taken to dinner with the Tor editors and authors, and I had an absolute ball! Rum ice cream....nummy!
- I saw many costumed characters that were simply stunning, and a few others I'd love to unsee.
- I lined up a number of new guests for Magical Words. Yay!
- Sunday afternoon I worked up the nerve to approach James Marsters and give him a copy of Mad Kestrel. When I was writing the book, he was the person playing Philip McAvery in the movie in my head. So I figured it might be nice to let him know. I was nervous as hell, but I'm told I sounded like a grown-up while I spoke to him. He shook my hand twice (!) and seemed genuinely pleased to receive the book. *grin*
- And of course, I spent money in the dealer's room.
By the way, he wasn't at D*Con, but Jim Hines just listed the twenty ways that Neil Gaiman is better than all of us. Go read!
