The game show in The Running Man was based upon an early 1980's Japanese game show called Trans American Ultra Quiz, in which contestants were tortured in various ways. The prize went to whichever contestant could stand the pain/humiliation the longest.

I wish I could afford to stay home all day and write. Since that's not presently in the cards, I have the next best thing - a job in a library. And my favorite day on the job is always the Day The Book Order Comes In. Which was today. We unpacked and processed five boxes of shiny new books, eight of which came home with me to be read. (See, I told you it's the next best thing!) Sitting on my desk right now are The Thirteenth Child, The Crossroads, Nathan Fox: Dangerous Times, Roar, Interworld, The Hunt For the Seventh, The Red Necklace and How To Ditch Your Fairy.

I still haven't decided which one to start with. They're all so pretty....

I vote for How To Ditch Your Fairy, if only because it's the only one of those I've read. :D I liked the kids in it, and their problems and their ideas on how to solve those problems made for an interesting story.

I ended up starting with The Crossroads, but I think I'll take Fairy to school to read there. I usually have two books going at once anyway, and these two are different enough that I can keep their plots clearly defined in my head.

Oh man I miss book order arrival day! the smell of the new books, the shiney, the pretty, the ooooh look at this one... and yes the magic of bing able to take it home and read it first heheheeee.
Those are some of the things that make me truly miss working in a library.

another thing I miss badly? Getting to browse through the baker and Taylor catalogs and see the new books, read the descriptions etc. I miss that more than I had expected.

Interworld is on my reading list (hells, a few of the others probably are, too, I don't remember). Let me know how you like it.

Well...it was okay. Neil can do a lot better. A lot better. I imagine my boys at school will like it.
