Jun. 9th, 2011 09:24 pmLike most mothers, I tend to see the little boy my son used to be whenever I look at him. Yeah, I know he's 18 and nearly 6 feet tall, but I still see the curly-headed little man who used to hug me around the knees because he couldn't reach any higher.
Until today.
We were at the University of South Carolina for orientation today. Parents and students had been split up from each other for a couple of hours, but after lunch we were all gathered together for a few minutes, so I went looking for my son. And I found him, sitting next to a beautiful young woman, chatting her up and smiling. All of a sudden, he didn't look like a little boy to me. He looked like the grown man I know he is. I was so blown away I couldn't speak, and I certainly wasn't going to interrupt and cramp his style. So I stood there, letting the crowd hide me, watching, until it was time for him to return to more orientation meetings again.
And I didn't even cry. :D
