Feb. 25th, 2007 09:57 amMy editor asked me if I had a favorite bookstore.
I suppose this might be a simpler question for some folks, but for me it's tricky. The big independant bookstore in my town is so college-oriented that books seem to be a sideline. The smaller independant sells new and used books, but they're all shelved together, and it makes my head hurt to shop there, so I rarely go. The only major chain here is Books-A-Million, and while I'm comfortable shopping there, it's far from a favorite. Which means that my favorite is probably the evil Amazon. But it's difficult to have a launch party or signing at Amazon. So yesterday I drove northward to the Joseph-Beth Bookseller.
This place is extraordinary. It's huge, but friendly. The fantasy & science fiction section not only had plenty of the popular titles, but also the less-well-known authors. The salespeople are pleasant, well-versed in what they sell and seem to posess a higher-than-average intelligence. The store has plenty of comfortable seating, and seems to welcome people hanging around a while.
I may have found my favorite bookstore.
