Mar. 31st, 2007 05:24 pmThe Beetle had his soccer jamboree today, so we packed up and drove out to the park to watch him play. While we were waiting for the game to begin, we were standing around chatting with other soccer parents, and the subject of my recent photo shoot came up. The mothers I was talking with were utterly unimpressed with the fact that I'd a) written a book, and b) had sold it to a publisher. One mother didn't seem to understand what I was talking about at all, and the other seemed to think that a book about pirates must be for children.
A few days ago, I was in a bookstore, talking to one of the customer service folks about my book coming out soon. She said, "You know we don't carry self-published books, right?" When I assured her that my book was being published by Tor, she was genuinely surprised.
Their reactions didn't hurt my feelings - my skin's much too thick for that, at least as far as writing is concerned. And there's certainly nothing wrong with having the wind taken out of my sails now and then.
Keeps me humble.
