Happy Fourth!
Jul. 4th, 2007 11:34 amWhen I was younger, I lived in the Lowcountry of South Carolina (and someday, perhaps, when I'm older, I will again.) One of the highlights of the summer was watching fireworks while listening to the Marine Corps Band play patriotic music. And the moment I always waited for was the 1812 Overture, which featured real cannons exploding at the proper place in the music. Since I can't be there this year, I'll instead please myself watching the Boston Pops show tonight, 'cause the Pops bring in the Army to fire the cannons. I'm sorry, when you've heard the piece as Tchaikovsky composed it, barrel drums just won't cut it anymore.
So while I wait, I'll be working on Book Two of mine, and reading my library books. I finished Poisons and Kushiel's Justice. Poisons wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped. Rather dry and textbookish. If you're interested in the ooey-gooey details of poisons, I'd recommend Deadly Doses instead. It's a sourcebook, but very accessible. I can tell you what happens if you swallow a battery! But maybe we should wait until after you've had lunch...
Kushiel's Justice was, as usual, a brilliant read. I posted about it on my Favorites page, so run over there to see what I thought.
I'm still reading A History of the End of the World, but so far, it's really enlightening. I've also got Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind, and I can't wait to start it. I'm not letting myself get into it until I finish The History... though.
