Jul. 7th, 2007 08:49 amI went to lunch yesterday with
faithhunter, and wore my fabulous new shoes. Which meant I also put my hair up, put on a little makeup and dressed to match the feet. I was probably a little fancy for the McAlister's, but I didn't care. *grin* Faith had just come from the spa and was glowing, so we sat and nibbled and talked and let all the people around us bask in our gorgeousness. Writing is a solitary business, as anyone can guess. When we get the chance to go out and talk to real, flesh people, we do it up right.
Then last night was the US premiere of Doctor Who. The Beetle had been invited to a friend's house for the night, so I arranged for taping of the episodes, then
philipmcavery and I curled up on the sofa for two hours. The Doctor's back - yay!
I returned to the computer for a little while after, while he watched Painkiller Jane. You know, all week they've been running commercials for last night's episode, saying "It's an ending you'll never see coming." Well, gee, isn't that the point of fiction, that it's not so predictable I can see the end coming? When I read King's Pet Sematary lo these many years ago, I stopped halfway, and didn't pick it up for a good two weeks. Because I'd reached the defining event in the protag's life, and I could see the whole story from that point on. I knew exactly what the end would be, and I didn't think I wanted to read it. I eventually did (back then, I couldn't not finish a book. A habit I have gotten over with my advancing age and impatience...) and sure enough, I was right. I wished he'd really given me an ending I couldn't see coming. I didn't read another word by him for years after, because he'd annoyed me so. **
So I think today as I work, I'm going to pay some special attention to the events I've laid out, and make sure it really is an ending no one can see coming. I hate to be predictable.
** Don't worry - I forgave Mr King when he released The Gunslinger. Can you blame me?
