While writing in his blog about his upcoming 20-year reunion, John Scalzi, Hugo-nominated author, posted a picture of himself at 17.

I find it absolutely fascinating that all of the men who are commenting are teasing and tormenting him about his hair or his glasses or his clothes, while all the women are remarking on his incredible cuteness. (Take a look, ladies, and see if you don't agree with me.) I'd like to think the guys are messing with him because they weren't as adorable as he was, but I'm not sure, really. Do men always mess with each other this way? Is this the kind of behavior I can come to expect from my almost-a-man?

Without even reading the discussion or looking at the pictures, yes. It's what we do to each other. Teasing and harassment are common coinage between men. Watch pack animals snarling and snapping at each other, without doing any real damage, unless one forgets his place in the hierarchy. We're not quite the same, but some of it is similar.
