By this time there were people on the streets, and I didn’t stop to see if they were alive or undead. I saw the ambulance coming down the main drag, its lights flashing. Good. They could deal with the beach zombies – I had to make sure my family stayed indoors. I passed the neighbors’ house, now deserted except for some random banging against the bathroom window. Grandma, I assumed. As long as she was trapped in there, she could stay. I loped up the stairs, and threw open the door. “Mama? Daddy?” I called. No answer. There was a note on the table, next to a plate of biscuits. Gone to the beach, come on down.
Oh God. I’d missed them.
