Jun. 13th, 2008 02:21 pmI got back to the beach, and saw them. Mama was under her little tent, Todd and Bleys were in the water on their boogie boards, riding the waves and splashing around. Daddy and Alicia were poking something at the water’s edge. I was so relieved, I started shrieking. They were okay, for now. But near the berm to the south, two people…no, not people, but zombies…were crawling over the rocks in that disgusting, too-familiar way. I dropped my weapons, running down to the water and yelling for the guys to get out, to come help me. Daddy and Alicia were messing with what seemed to be a dead shark, although it flopped in the water as if it was still alive and trying to bite their feet. Could the effect work on animals? I’d never heard, but I didn’t care right now. I yanked them back, pointing at the zombies on the rocks. “They’re back!” I sobbed. “Get a weapon!”
Alicia grabbed a lighter. Todd and Bleys took the fireplace tools, and I took the lighter fluid. “Bleys,” I said, “I want you to get Grandpa and Granna to the house. Can you do that?” He nodded, brandishing the poker and grinning. God help me, he probably saw this as some sort of video game. But I had to trust he could protect his grandparents. He led them off the beach, and I turned my attention to the zombies. They were so close now.
