Jul. 8th, 2008 05:04 pmI've been invited to be a guest at RavenCon next spring, and I'm just tickled! The GoH is Jack McDevitt, science fiction author and passing acquaintance, and I'm looking forward to renewing our acquaintance. Have I told y'all about Jack? If I did, it's worth hearing again. My oldest friend in the world was diagnosed with leukemia a few years ago. Jan had to undergo a bone marrow transplant, and she was, understandably, concerned that she might not survive the surgery or the disease. She started writing letters to her favorite authors, telling them what their work had meant to her. One of those authors was Jack McDevitt. Imagine her surprise when Jack called her to chat! They had a lovely visit on the phone, and she was floating for days after. But that's not the end of the story. In 2004, Jack was a guest at the Southeastern Writer's Workshop, which I was attending. Jan had, of course, survived the surgery and was recovering well, but she was still immune-suppressed, and could not be among groups of people. She asked me to get her books signed for her. Not only did Jack happily sign all her books, he knew exactly who I was talking about, asked about her situation and was delighted to hear the good news of her recovery. This, dear ones, is a gentleman of the highest order.
We're having some adorable fresh brussels sprouts, nummy baby artichokes and lemon-poppy seed baked chicken for dinner. I'd planned to go to the gym this afternoon, but the weather is turning ugly, so I may just do my lifting here in the living room. I did legs yesterday, and arms are easy enough to manage on my own.
