Today in 1916, Mary the circus elephant was publicly executed in the Erwin, Tennessee railyard, after killing a drifter named Red Eldridge the previous day. The five-ton animal was hanged from a derrick car in front of 3,000 onlookers, and left hanging for half an hour. Yes, you read that correctly - they hanged an elephant. Because shooting it would have been so boring.

This morning I opened my front door only to discover that a writing spider had built a web entirely across the entry way. It was big enough that I couldn't even duck under it! Ms Spider was hanging out at the top of the doorway. I told her that I was sorry but the area wasn't zoned for her habitation, and I carefully swept the web down. She hung onto the door jamb, so I moved her to the gardenia bush next to my steps, and I left to go to the Post Office. When I got home about twenty minutes later, she had started another web across the stair railing leading to my front door! Ms. Spider has been relocated to the yard of the uninhabited house next door, where I hope she'll be happy.

It's so good that the Beetle is away this weekend - with his bug phobia, he'd have had nightmares for a month.

*grin* I'm considering wandering next door later to see if she's successfully built another web.

I would have loved to be able to photograph it. Hmmm... maybe next week. ~grins~

I am, however, very, VERY glad B. wasn't home to see it.

My sister is terrified of spiders. When we lived on our old apt, there was a spider who lived on our balcony. It knew she was afraid of it and would actually charge it her. It was funny to watch. (Me, I took one look and stomped it like the bug it was...)

I never, ever kill a spider. It's bad luck, and besides they eat the nasty flies and mosquitoes that carry disease. :D

The Beetle, however, is terrified of bugs in all their guises. If he'd been here and realized the web was "trapping" us in our house, I'd have been calling a therapist for the earliest appointment.
